Visa Free Regime Finland-Russia Proposal
28 May 2008; Finnish Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb this week broke new ground when proposing that the country introduce visa exemptions for Russians. Finnish authorities however remain split on whether to ease visa relations with the big neighbour. Finnish decision-makers and officials have not yet taken a definitive stand on the issue of visa-free travel with Russia. Minister for Foreign Affairs Alexander Stubb (Nat. Coalition Party) said last week that the lifting of mandatory travel visas would be the right move in the development of relations between Russia and Finland, Helsingin Sanomat reports.
In so doing, Stubb deviated from the traditional Finnish stance, which has favoured maintaining visas. The number of visas issued by Finnish consular authorities is strongly increasing and is expected to exceed 600,000 this year. Russian Visas Back to Normal After UEFA Visa Free Travel
The UEFA Champions League Cup Final in Moscow was an amazing event, when the Russian authorities waived visas for fans holding tickets for the match were allowed visa free entry to Russia - initially for a 72 hour period and subsequently for the extended period of 17-25 May. We assume that this was due to the inability of the visa service in the London Embassy to process the required number of visas in the relevant timescale. Thank goodness that common sense prevailed. We wonder if this may herald a change in attitude for future events? Maybe Eurovision will be the next big test in May 2009 - or maybe Sochi Winter Olympics? Whatever the case, visa free travel encouraged thousands of fans to travel to Moscow who would not otherwise have done so - and Russia received a massive and positive reaction among the thousands of press who descended upon the city. Well done Moscow!
